I'm Sally Apokedak, and I
live with my son and my
daughter and my old, old
mother, in the lovely city of
Atlanta.
Born to missionary
parents, I spent my early
years in Taiwan. By the time
I was six, I'd been around
the world. The wanderlust
I acquired early followed me
into adult life, taking me to
work in places as far-flung as
Barrow, Alaska, and Santa
Cruz, Bolivia.
My most fulfilling job,
though, was staying home,
taking care of my family. My
husband was a quadriplegic
and we adopted two children.

I'm talking about life and
children's books, because
the two seem to get all
tangled up together for me.
I've loved both--the life
and the books--ever since
I was...well...a child.
I review books that I
have bought or borrowed
or begged. Sometimes I
beg them from authors
and publishers.
No matter where I get
books, I always give my
honest opinion when I
write reviews. I am not
qualified to review books,
really. I'm just a reader
with strong opinions. I love
talking about what I read
and want to get others
excited about children's
books, too.
Many links on this blog
lead to Amazon.com. If you
like my reviews and you
click on a book title or
cover picture and then buy
the book (or anything else)
from Amazon, I will get a
small percentage of the
sale price. Feel free to do
that. It helps support my
book-buying habit. I made
about thirty bucks this way
last year.
Outstanding review. I’m nearing the end of Landon Snow and couldn’t agree more with your observations. Once the Odds came into the story, it REALLY takes off. And Randy does such an outstanding job with the use of words. Playful, yes, but with intent. Really good writing.

One day you’re going to hate one of my posts and I’ll fall over dead. ha ha
Thanks for leaving all these encouraging comments.
I’ll have to post something controversial to lure some other commenters out of lurkdom to keep you company one of these days. =0)
I found one of those cool similies you alluded to: ” She giggled, and the sound of it made Landon think of bubbles breaking away from soapy foam.” Landon Snow and the Auctor’s Riddle, p. 181.
Yeah, bring on the controversy. I do enjoy being a fly in the ointment. Just haven’t found occasion here yet. Heh heh heh.

yep, that was a good one. There were many times I was reading and I’d go, “Man, I wish I wrote like this.” Such fresh ways he showed things.
now about controversy . . . I know what your hot buttons are. I could post something on slapping out books fast and furious, perhaps . . . never mind.
Hahah–that might stir up a comment or two. Let’s see … edgy’s been done. Conversion. Justification vs. sanctification. Oh, right this should be a topic related to children’s lit. How about a review of Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain books. I know those are not on your favorite list. Or we could discuss wafe characters like poor little Gibby from George MacDonald, whom you love.
Seriously, it would be cool to run a poll or something to see what kind of characters readers favor.
Or even to discuss why some characters seem so easy to connect with and others are … well, forgetable.
