Bethany Roberts has so much stuff on her site. If you are interested writing a children’s book, check her out.
Here are a few favorites from Bethany’s quote page:
“Fantasy’s hardly an escape from reality. It’s a way of understanding it.” Lloyd Alexander
“You have to write whichever book it is that wants to be written. And then, if it’s going to be too difficult for grown-ups, you write it for children.” Madeleine L’Engle
“The beautiful part of writing is that you don’t have to get it right the first time, unlike, say, a brain surgeon. You can always do it better, find the exact word, the apt phrase, the leaping simile.” Robert Cormier
“I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions.” James Michener
“What no wife of a writer can ever understand is that a writer is working even when he’s staring out the window.” Burton Rascoe
“The profession of book-writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business.” John Steinbeck
“Almost anyone can become an author; the business is to collect money and fame from this state of being.” A.A. Milne
“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” Groucho Marx
And for all the writers who have suffered some sting from getting less than perfect reviews from my keyboard:
“A critic is a legless man who teaches running.” anonymous
“Nature fits all her children with something to do;
He who would write and can’t write, can surely review.” James Russell Lowell“Confronted by an absolutely infuriating review it is sometimes helpful for the victim to do a little personal research on the critic. Is there any truth to the rumor that he had no formal education beyond the age of eleven? In any event, is he able to construct a simple English sentence? Do his participles dangle? When moved to lyricism does he write ‘I had a fun time’? Was he ever arrested for burglary? I don’t know that you will prove anything this way, but it is perfectly harmless and quite soothing.” Jean Kerr

I love those quotes — all inspiring. I think I’ll go to sleep tonight, letting Michenor’s “swirl and swing of words” lull me into dreamland, where I can write in a calm, quiet forest of silence (instead of the NOISE of my house.) Keeps life challenging though. I probably would not be blogging in snatches if I were out in a quiet forest writing really bad poetry.
I love that “swirl and swing of words” comment, too. And the good thing about writing is that you can create the quiet the forest within the hubbub of the house. You paint it with your words. You’ve done a good job of it with your entries into the carnival of beauty.
Cool. I am sending your website to my wife. We both have two children (6 and 4 years old). I found you through GA Christian Bloggers. My wife’s blog site is http://www.badalice.blogspot.com.
What are some of your favorite books as a child? I have to blog about that one day.
Blessings to you.
[...] t 20 minutes. (Because I’m moody!) If you love great quotes about writing, Sally at All About Children’s Books has collected some wonders. More inspiration for you. [...]
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Jeff.
That Bad Alice is one interesting character. Add Drama Queen and Firecracker and it sounds like you have a house full of wonderful women. Not sure I’d want to live there, but then . . . =0)
uh . . . my favorite books from childhood . . .
Wolves of Willoughby Chase
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Hobbit
The Mysterious Island
Maybe . . . it’s really hard to say because I loved so many. Oh, Anne of Green Gables. Yikes! How could I forget the Anne-girl?
