I remember visiting the desert for the first time when I was ten and finding that it was full of life and color. It was delightful to see the plants and animals that grew in the barren regions.
Today, Nancy Bo Flood took me on a journey to discover a different kind of life in the sandstone of the Desert Southwest.
In Sand to Stone and Back Again, Nancy is not highlighting life, but the changes in the stone.
Did you know that sandstone has a life cycle? It starts as grains of sand which are compressed to make stone. Then wind and water wear it away until it is, once again, broken up into thousands of grains of sand.
The pictures in this book are wonderful. Texture and color will wow you. Oceans full of sand-dune waves and curtains of rock will surprise and delight readers of all ages.
This is one you’ll want to look at over and over.

SAND TO STONE is kids’ nonfiction at it’s most beautiful and transcendental! Full of facts and breathtaking photos about the life cycle of sand stone, it’s much more than information about rock. I”m reminded of the William Blake line, (roughly) “To see the world in a grain of sand…hold infinity in the palm of your hand.” Nancy Bo Flood and Tony Kuyper see the world in sandstone, and joyfully show the rest of us, as well.
A wonderful capture of life and mystery …
The visuals, the story … and a sense of nature’s poetry.
How wonderful!
This gorgeous book is a treat! I’ve shared it with many of the teachers at my school, and am so pleased to see it recommended here.
A great read – visual poetry. For those of us who love rocks, this is a pleasure, both to read alone, or to my 4 year old, Eva. She loves the textures, both visual and verbal, and the sense of exploration that fill this book.
This is a beautiful book, truly enjoyable for all ages. I highly recommend it!
A wonderful book that captures the beauty of the Southwest, and how it relates to life.
A beautiful book for everyone to enjoy!
This wonderful book portrays change — in sandstone and in people — beautifully. I’m glad to see it here!
wow! Lots of fans for Nancy Bo Flood and her story of the sandstone. Well deserved praise for a wonderful little book.
Nancy Bo Flood’s poetic voice is magically mesmerizing. I just LOVE how she can communicate dry, factual, non-fictional information with an almost hynotic lulling and yet somehow manages to maintain lively enthusiasm for the topic! How in the world does she do it? I’ll tell you how. Because she is an authentic person who is passionately committed to her topic and her readers. Nancy Bo Flood is the real deal. Thanks for featuring her fine work today.
