A few weeks ago on the Blue Boards there was some discussion about authors of adult fiction jumping on the hot YA bandwagon. Famous authors hopping into the latest hot genre is not appreciated by the unknowns who have been slogging away in the unpopular genre for years, just waiting for it to heat up. And there is some question about whether authors who normally write for adults can write well for children.
But I have to say, I’m looking forward to Grisham’s MG novel, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer.
I read the first chapter, and I was surprised that Grisham didn’t think thirteen-year-old boys liked to have girlfriends. But other than that…this MG feels pretty much like his adult novels to me. Not a lot of fancy writing but characters you like and an interesting story.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with writers hopping across genres, myself. I don’t care who writes the books as long as they’re good.
